In the seven months since the 2012 Summer Olympics, many athletes are still basking in their lives since competition. For one athlete, life has taken a drastic turn.
CNN is reporting that Pistorius, the double amputee sprinter who garnered international attention by simply competing in the men’s 400 meters, is charged with murder in the shooting death of girlfriend, model Reeva Steenkamp, in his home this morning. Steenkamp and Pistorius were reportedly the only two people in the home at the time of the shooting.
Earlier reports stated Pistorius had mistaken Steenkamp for an intruder, but South African authorities have dismissed those claims, stating that the South African press was responsible for those claims. Pistorius has been cooperative with authorities.
According to authorities, this is not the first time police have been called to the home, stating that the incidents were of a “domestic nature.”
Steenkamp was excited about Valentine’s Day to the point of tweeting this message to her followers: “What do you have up your sleeve for your love tomorrow??? #getexcited #ValentinesDay.” In addition, she added, “It should be a day of love for everyone 🙂 may it be blessed!”
Pistorius remains in jail and is scheduled to appear before the magistrate on Friday. Apparently, there is no particular motive for the crime.
