Lady Gaga has had many disputes with controversy and attention, but this time it’s anti-gun activists who are in dispute.
Friday, just one day after Vice President Joe Biden met with Congress and the National Rifle Association (NRA), Gaga wore a gun bra while performing at the Rogers Arena in Vancouver, Canada for the “Born This Way Ball” tour. Vice President Biden and the NRA met to discuss gun control legislation after the events that took place and lives lost in Newtown, Connecticut. Many anti-gun activists and concerned citizens had problems with this ensemble with two fake, plastic automatic rifles in the bra’s cups.
Although Gaga has shown her support for gun control legislation by signing onto the Demand A Plan campaign to end gun violence as well as a full-page ad in the New York times last month, this is not the first time this pop-culture phenomenon has sported rifles in her outlandish fashion style and ensembles. She wore a similar gun bra in 2010 for her music video “Alejandro” as well as on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine that same year.
A spokesman for DC-based Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, Ladd Everitt, spoke out against Gaga’s outfit stating “I think it is gun porn” and “It’s almost like she’s telling her fans, ‘The only way I can stimulate you is to show you guns and violence.’ Does she not care about some of the grotesque episodes of gun violence we’ve seen lately? Is she not aware of them?”
