It looks like some major feathers have been ruffled at Chick-fil-A.
According to The Huffington Post, A Chicago-based lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) advocacy group reports that the restaurant chain has agreed to cease donating to right-wing groups that oppose same-sex marriage.
In a press release, the Civil Rights Agenda (TCRA) claims Chicago Alderman Proco Moreno has confirmed that Chick-fil-A officials declared in an internal document that the company “will treat every person equally, regardless of sexual orientation.” TCRA reportedly served as an advisor to the alderman while he negotiated concessions with Chick-fil-A executives. The exact details of what the negotiations entailed are still unclear.
“We are very pleased with this outcome and thank Alderman Moreno for his work on this issue,” said Anthony Martinez, executive director of TCRA. “I think the most substantive part of this outcome is that Chick-fil-A has ceased donating to organizations that promote discrimination, specifically against LGBT civil rights.”
Allegedly titled Chick-fil-A: Who We Are,” the food chain’s internal memo reportedly states that they will “treat every person with honor, dignity and respect-regardless of their beliefs, race, creed, sexual orientation and gender.”
Rick Garcia, policy advisor for The Civil Rights Agenda, spoke favorably of the document, but hoped the company would adopt an anti-discrimination policy at the corporate level as well. “It is one thing for a company to say they respect everyone they serve and employ, it is quite another for them to put that into their policies and demand that all employees adhere to that behavior,” said Garcia.
The backlash ignited against Chick-fil-A after an interview Cathy gave with the Baptist Press in July. When asked about the restaurant group’s, “support of the traditional family,” the president responded, “Well, guilty as charged.”
